In Canada, a lieutenant governor (it was explained for the Americans among the visitors to Government House in Victoria, British Columbia, that it is pronounced LEF-tenant Governor, and not LOO-tenant Governor) is the representative of the King of Canada in the government of each province. The governor general of Canada appoints the lieutenant governors on the advice of the prime minister of Canada to carry out most of the monarch's constitutional and ceremonial duties for an unfixed period of time—known as serving "His Excellency’s pleasure" – though five years is the normal convention. Down one of the main hallways off the front foyer were portraits and shields of their arms of seven recent lieutenant governors, excepting the incumbent, Wendy Lisogar-Cocchia, who was appointed on January 20, 2025, and whose portrait had at that time (April 25) not yet been painted.
